Lynmouth Beach is located along a straight section of coastline, backed by spectacular wooded hills and served by a unique cliff railway from Lynton. The beach is predominantly used by tourists and fishermen, and is approximately 460-500 metres wide. The West Lyn River flows into the sea to the west of the beach, while the East and West Lyn rivers meet at Lynmouth and flow across the rocky beach.
Lynmouth Beach is a shingle beach, divided by the mouth of the River Lyn, which also forms a small harbour. The beach is surrounded by spectacular high cliffs, hills, and woodlands, making it a popular spot for walkers and those seeking stunning views. Given the right conditions, Lynmouth is known as one of the best surf spots in Devon, although this occurs only a few times a year. The beach is also used for fishing, and at low tide, there are some good rockpools to explore.
During the summer season, deckchairs can be hired on the beach, and there are plenty of parking options, including disabled parking, along the esplanade just above the beach. The surrounding area offers a range of amenities, including a gift shop, a fish bar, and public toilets. Visitors can also take a ride on the Lynton Cliff Railway, which takes them up the side of a cliff into the town of Lynton. The town offers many more shops, pubs, and restaurants to explore.
Lynmouth is enclosed by a National Park, referred to as 'The little Switzerland of England', making it an idyllic location for a walk to enjoy the unspoilt scenery. There are two beaches in the area: Lynmouth West Beach, a charming harbour and shingle beach, and Lynmouth East beach, also known as Blacklands beach, which can be reached by crossing over the Lyn River towards Countisbury Hill. The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, a unique water-operated cliff railway dating back to 1890, is worth a visit, being the highest and steepest water-powered railway in the world.
Lynmouth Beach is on the Exmoor Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
