Woody Bay is a sheltered bay backed by steep cliffs covered in woodlands, with a zig-zagging access path leading down through the woods to a rocky pebble and shingle beach. The cove is nestled just west of Lynton and was previously known as Wooda Bay until 1901.
Around a hundred years ago, Woody Bay was earmarked for development as a holiday resort to rival neighbouring Lynton and Lynmouth. The owner built a pier to allow ferries to dock and a golf course to attract wealthy visitors. However, the pier was damaged by storms, and the owner ran out of money, eventually dying in prison. Today, all that remains of the Woody Bay empire is the hotel.
The area is a birdwatcher's paradise, with amazing coastal walks to be taken. Visitors can enjoy the rock and pebble beach, explore the ancient oak woodland area, and follow the stream that flows down the hill. There is plenty of holiday accommodation available around Woody Bay, ranging from camping grounds to romantic B&Bs.
To get to Woody Bay by car, take the A361 towards Barnstaple, then the A39 through Lynton, and follow signs for Martinhoe and Woody Bay.
Woody Bay Railway Station originally opened in 1898 and closed in 1935. It has now been restored and is a popular visitor attraction.
Woody Bay is on the Exmoor Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
