Instow Beach is situated within the Taw/Torridge Estuary, approximately 1.1 kilometres wide, and is backed by sand dunes and the town of Instow. The beach is a wheelchair-accessible sandy beach set where the Torridge river meets the Taw estuary, making it an attractive area that has always been popular with artists.
The beach offers calm waters, protected from swell by sandbanks at the mouth of the Taw estuary, making it a good choice for families. There are plenty of things to do for children and lots of space to play. Visitors can also kayak down the rivers Taw and Torridge from the beach. The beautiful scenery and views across the water to Appledore attract artists from around the country. The waters are good for fishing and sailing.
There are shops and cafes in the village, which is directly behind the beach. However, visitors are advised not to go swimming due to poor water quality, as Instow beach has consistently failed to meet the requirements imposed by the Bathing Water Directives. The popular Tarka Trail starts at Instow for walkers and cyclists. Dogs are allowed on the beach, but there are restrictions in the summer months.
Instow Beach is adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
