Porth Oer Beach, also known as Whistling Sands or Port Oer, is a picturesque sandy bay located on the north coast of the Lleyn peninsula in Wales.
Porth Oer Beach is a small, sandy bay situated on the Llŷn Heritage Coast, a lesser-known but stunning region on the north coast of the Lleyn peninsula. The beach is a crescent-shaped stretch of pale sand, backed by steep grassy cliffs and fields of grazing livestock. Visitors can access the beach via a path from the National Trust car park, which offers lovely views of the surrounding area. One of the unique features of Porth Oer Beach is the sand, which makes a distinct squeaking or whistling noise when walked upon, a phenomenon caused by the unusual shape of the sand grains. This effect is reportedly only observed on two beaches in Europe, with Porth Oer being one of them.
The beach is popular with families, surfers, and bodyboarders due to the waves that break on large swells. However, care should be taken in the water as there are submerged rocks and no lifeguards on duty. During the summer season, a small shop is open next to the beach, offering refreshments and supplies. Additionally, there is a beachfront cafe located on the southern side of the beach.
Porth Oer Beach is adjacent to the Llyn Peninsula Coastal Path and the Wales Coast Path.
