Cwmtydu Beach is a small, enclosed shingle cove situated to the south-west of New Quay. The beach is surrounded by cliffs, which are topped by a National Trust path that offers breathtaking views across Cardigan Bay. This stretch of coast is known for its rich wildlife, with seals and porpoises occasionally spotted in the waters.
The beach has a rich history, having been used as a hideaway for smugglers in the area, with much of their booty hidden in the caves cut into the surrounding cliffs. Today, the beach is a popular spot for relaxation and exploration, with a variety of rock pools to discover and a selection of fish species to catch, including flounder, plaice, dogfish, bass, and gurnard. The beach is also home to an old, restored lime kiln, which was used to burn limestone for fertiliser.
Cwmtydu Beach is also known as Seals Bay due to the resident grey seal population, which numbers around 5,000 in the west of Wales. Visitors may be lucky enough to spot these amazing creatures coming ashore to rest, as well as bottlenose dolphins that can be found in the waters of Cardigan Bay.
The beach itself is made up of soft pebbles and shingle, making it a tranquil spot for relaxation and exploration. Visitors can enjoy coastal walks via the National Trust path, taking in the stunning views across Cardigan Bay.
Cwmtydu Beach is adjacent to the Ceredigion Coast Path and the Wales Coast Path.
