Plymouth Hoe East Beach is a developed promenade with a narrow strip of shingle beach located in the city of Plymouth.
Plymouth Hoe East is situated just in front of Hoe Park and facing Mount Batten. The beach is a shingle and rock beach approximately 150 metres wide, near the centre of Plymouth on the south coast of Devon.
The beach is part of a developed promenade area just below Smeaton’s Lighthouse. The beach itself is rather small and composed of rocks and shingle, offering fine views over Plymouth Sound, a lively natural harbour with plenty of activities to watch.
Plymouth Hoe is reputed to be the spot where Sir Francis Drake was famously playing bowls, a game which he decided to finish before setting out to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588. A statue to the great adventurer commemorates this event, behind which is The Royal Citadel, a 17th century fortress still used by the military today.
For those wishing to enjoy an outdoor swim without the risks of entering the sea, Tinside Lido, a delightful 1930’s art-deco saltwater swimming pool, is available. The lido is open from the end of May until early September.
Jennycliff Beach, located on the east coast of Plymouth Sound, offers great views of Drakes Island, Cornwall, and Plymouth City Centre.
Plymouth Hoe East Beach is adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
