Located on the south coast of Cornwall, just the other side of the Tamar from Plymouth, Portwrinkle Beach is a rural beach that boasts a mix of sandy and rocky shores. The beach, which is approximately one kilometre wide, is backed by cliffs and features numerous rock pools that are perfect for exploring at low tide.
Portwrinkle Beach has two main beaches, one of which is Finnygook, a small south-facing shingle beach. At low tide, a sandy beach is exposed, complete with rocky outcrops that are ideal for rockpooling. Visitors to the beach can also explore an old WWII Pill Box and stop for a snack at the Jolly Roger beach café.
Fishing was once the main industry in Portwrinkle, and like many other small coves and beaches, it was also involved with smuggling. According to local legend, the ghost of notorious smuggler Silas Finn still haunts the beaches of Portwrinkle.
The beach is dog friendly all year round, making it an ideal destination for pet owners. Its rural location and tranquil atmosphere make it a great spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
Portwrinkle Beach is adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
