Tintagel Beach is situated near the historic town of Tintagel, which features a rugged coastline and is home to the famous Tintagel Castle. Merlin's Cave, a large sea cave located underneath Tintagel Castle, is another popular attraction at Tintagel Beach. The cave is accessible during low tide, when the waters recede and reveal a cavernous entrance. According to folklore, Merlin, the mythical magician, was said to have been born in a cave beneath Tintagel Castle and used the cave as a place of retreat and contemplation.
Visitors to Tintagel Beach and Merlin's Cave should be aware that access to the cave is dependent on tides, and it can be dangerous to enter the cave during high tide or rough sea conditions. It is recommended to check local tide times and follow safety guidelines when visiting.
Tintagel Beach is on the Pentire Point - Widemouth Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
